Vik Muniz is an artist that I have respected since I learned
of his work in 2011. Vik was born to a poor neighborhood in Brazil, but built
himself an artist life in New York. The work that inspires me is his trash
series with the catadores of Brazil. Vik Muniz created portraits of the catadores with
the trash that they had collected and a warehouse floor as the canvases. Not only did he manage to show the importance
of the seemingly small people through the scale, but massive donations were
made to the people who helped in the process and their fellow catadores; not in
an effort to save them from their lives, but to help show that their lives are
important.
